What does an esthetician do?  Estheticians specialize in skin beautification.  They provide skincare treatments to the face and body to improve in individuals appearance.  Other titles for this profession include aestheticians, skin care specialists, skin care therapists, spa technicians, facialists, or skin care technicians.  An esthetician occupationaldescription includes a variety of tasks which may include:

  • evaluating clients’ skin condition and appearance
  • discussing available treatments
  • determining which products will improve clients’ skin quality
  • applying facials including peels and masks
  • performing full-body treatments
  • deep pre cleansing and facial massage
  • doing body wraps
  • applying various skin care treatments with creams, lotions and tonics
  • cleaning the skin before applying makeup
  • applying makeup

Other esthetician duties may include:

  • performing hair removal via waxing, electrolysis or laser treatments
  • doing eyelash and eyebrow tinting and extensions
  • aromatherapy
  • applying permanent makeup
  • makeup application
  • keeping patient records
  • teaching and advising clients on how to apply makeup, and how to take care of their skin
  • referring clients to another skincare specialist, such as a dermatologist
  • sterilizing equipment and clean work areas
